Apollo 11 Transcripts

Series of 27 booklets that reimagine the transmissions between Houston and the Apollo 11 mission.

On July 16, 1969 Apollo 11 launched from Cape Kennedy with Neil Armstrong, Mike Collins, Buzz Aldrin aboard. It would be the realization of a national goal set by John F. Kennedy in 1961: perform a crewed lunar landing and return to Earth. Around 650 million people across the globe watched as Armstrong took his first step onto the moon and uttered words heard across time, “…one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

This series of 27 booklets reimagine how those transcripts could be presented. Printing techniques were considered for how it could enhance the narrative experience. As a result, there are five styles applied at various stages in the mission: prior to launch as black text on white paper, between the Earth and the moon as black text on black paper, close proximity to the moon as black text on vellum, on the moon as black text on shimmer paper and splashdown as navy on light blue paper. Different type styles were applied to convey the various “characters” of the mission. Folios and other information are inspired by zero gravity and float on the pages borders.
