Redesigns of iconic video game cases with an emphasis on color.

Since the early to mid 1990s, video game box art has been primarily dominated by 3D renders – especially in the West. This has been done to better utilize existing assets built during game development and to better appeal to a wide audience. While more modern box art has become more visually appealing, some of those early day covers felt like they would benefit from a facelift. In addition, not having the original box art was making the shelf look kind of odd.

To construct these new covers, assets were first created in Procreate using existing renderings and concept work from development as reference. These were then placed in InDesign and paired with appropriate typefaces and compositions. Color was another important aspect of these covers. Many box art renderings from the mid 2000s to 2010s were muddy and bleak. To reintroduce some energy to the covers, colors were selected from or inspired by the visual elements within each game.
